Get Your DSL on the Cheap(er)
Mar 11th, 2008 by Scott Walker
Call me crazy, but the times when I am able to take my work home is often some of the most productive time that I have. My focus is clearer, and I am able to settle in to a comfortable place and work where the distractions are fewer. I get a type of productivity going that I could only refer to as “the zone”, but I couldn’t be hardly as productive without a quality internet connection-something that doesn’t come cheap…or does it?
I take a lot of pride in my high-speed DSL connection. It gets me where I need to go, and keeps up with my pace. But the price has always left me with a bitter taste. Probably because I am forced to pay extra for the unnecessary phone line that accompanies it. After all, about $25 per month goes to something I never use. Not anymore though.
Though most companies won’t come out and tell you, it doesn’t have to be that way. Many will even tell you that it has to be that way. It doesn’t. Most DSL carrierers offer a “naked DSL” that they won’t tell you about. A line that only serves you internet without the added cost of a phone line. You will hear them called naked, dry loop, and some will even give it a fancy name, but it is all the basically the same, and you will only get it if you ask.
Yesterday I knocked about $25 off of my monthly bill by telling Windstream to give me their Green Streak service(almost naked). Needless to say, I work much happier now.
